Finding God at the Movies: Justice and Mercy

Whether we watch them on the big screen or on small handheld devices, film plays a major role in the formation of our ideas and values. Many of our mental images of biblical characters and events are often drawn from films, from The Ten Commandments to The Passion of the Christ. And contemporary Christian film has often explored Christian views on abortion, marriage and divorce, and other social issues.

In this 4-week class, we will focus on films treating the themes of justice and mercy. Through examining clips from films such as To Kill a Mockingbird, and Les Miserables, we will explore questions that run to the heart of Christianity. What does the Bible have to say about administering justice? How can we live out the command to love our neighbor when the needs of the world seem so overwhelming? Does forgiving someone also mean condoning their actions? Is it a sign of weakness on our part? How can we fulfill the command to love “the least of these my brothers"?
